Istvan SERTO-RADICS

The Committee of the Regions is drafting an opinion based on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on "The statute and funding of European political parties and European political foundations" COM (2012) 499 final.

European political parties, and their affiliated political foundations, have an important role to play to form a truly European public sphere and express the will of EU citizens. Increasing their visibility, recognition, effectiveness, transparency and accountability will help to bridge the gap between local, regional, national and EU politics. Reaching this goal will be ever more pertinent in the context of the Year of Citizenship 2013 and the elections to the European Parliament in 2014.
That is why, to provide them the recognition they require and help them to tackle some of the long-standing obstacles they have faced, the European political parties and foundations need to have a European legal statute. Obtaining this European legal personality will imply for them to meet high standards in fields such as internal democracy, governance and respect for the values on which the Union is founded. They will also be subject to a comprehensive set of rules and controls both for their recognition and their financing.
To ensure that the political will of the Union's citizens can be truly expressed at the European level, and in order to look into the link between political parties at European, local and regional levels, the Committee of the Regions is looking forward to receive your inputs and to address your specific local and regional concerns.

The Rapporteur on the Opinion, Mr István SERTO-RADICS (HU/ALDE), Member of the CIVEX Commission of the CoR and Mayor of Uszka, together with his expert Mr Andras SZALAY would be happy to meet with representatives of local and regional associations, representatives of political parties and their foundations and other stakeholders for a consultation and an exchange of views on this opinion.
