RAMON TRIAS FARGAS MEMORIAL 

The Memorial was established in 1996 to commemorate the late figure of Ramon Trias Fargas, symbol of Catalan Liberalism. The Memorial is awarded every year to a relevant intellectual, politician or writer whose career is based in the principles of support to liberal democratic values, human rights and tolerance. 

In 1996, the Memorial was awarded to Professor Juan Marichal, historian and Harvard Professor, probably one of the most notorious searcher on the tradition of Spanish Liberalism, so opposed to the dominant thinking in Spanish history. 

In 1997, the memorial was awarded to Dr. Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Germany's former Deputy Federal Chancellor. He served the German Government for 23 years, 5 years as minister of the Interior and 18 years as minister for Foreign Affairs, being closely identified with Germany's post-war politics and policies. 

In 1998, The Memorial was awarded to Mme. Simone Veil. She was minister in the Giscard d'Estaing government, president of the Liberal Group in the European Parliament and president of the European Parliament. At present is Ministre d'État. 

In 1999, The Memorial was awarded to Sir David Steel, Lord of Aikwood. He was President of the Liberal International and actually is the First Chairman of  the recovered Scottish Parliament after his abolition in 1707. 

In 2000, The Memorial was awarded to Mr. Antonio Garrigues Walker. President of the Garrigues Lawyers, and the José Ortega y Gasset Foundation. Appointed World-Wide Lawyer by the “ Universal Center of the Peace”. Vice president of the Tri-lateral Commission.   

In 2001, The Memorial was awarded to Mr. Marc Forné, Prime Minister of Andorra. Mr. Forné founded the Liberal Party of Andorra in 1984 and he is its president since 1995. The Liberal Party of Andorra is member of the Liberal International since 1996. 

In 2002. The Memorial was awarded to Mr. Colin W. Eglin, founded the liberal anti-apartheid Progressive Party in South-Africa. Member of the new democratic South-Africa Parliament since 1994.   

In 2003, The Memorial was awarded to Dr. Janez Dronvsek, president of the Republic of Slovenia and the Liberal Party of Slovenia. 

In 2004, The Memorial was awarded to Mr. Pat Cox, Past President of the European Parliament (2002-2004).  

In 2005, The  Memorial was awarded to Ms. Annemie-Neyts, Past President of the Liberal International (1999- May 2005) and President of the ELDR Party since September 2005. 

In 2006, The Memorial was awarded to Mr. Gijs de Vries, Counter-Terrorism Coordinator of the European Union.                                              ………………………………………..
