Dear Madam, Dear Sir,
We are pleased to inform you that the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe together with the International association Droit au Droit and the Transnational Radical Party, in partnership with the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa (Italy), the Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland), the Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania) and the international association No Peace Without Justice, are organising a Public Hearing on "Towards the Harmonization of European rules and practices on the right of defense" to be held at the European Parliament in Brussels, on 18-19 October 2007.
The Conference aims to generate an in-depth discussion of EU Member States enforced domestic legislation and praxis in relation to the safeguard of the rights of defense, especially in pre-trial criminal proceedings and in cases in which cross-borders elements are involved, with the goal to find grounds for European common minimum standards governing procedural law which could lead to ensure a uniform safeguard of fundamental human rights all over the EU.
The Conference will also provide an opportunity for presenting the results of a comparative study on EU Member States rules governing the rights of defense, carried out by the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa and its partners in the framework of the AGIS Programme implemented by the European Commission.
Participants to the seminar will include law practitioners, judges and bar associations representatives, experts in criminal law, NGOs and international organisations representatives, as well as Members of the European Parliament and other European institutions representatives.
The Hearing will be held on Thursday 18 October, from 9.30 to 18.00, and on Friday 19 October, from 9.30 to 12.30. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in French, English, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish and Spanish.
