Would truly European elections contribute to a greater identification of citizens with European affairs? British Liberal Democrat and member of the European Parliament Andrew Duff presented his European Parliament report on reforming the law for European elections.

Following this proposal, 25 members of the Parliament would be elected on EU-wide transnational lists presented by the European political parties. The European Liberal Forum organized the event together with the ELDR Party and LYMEC at the fringe of the executive committee meeting of Liberal International in London on 14 October 2011. Facilitated by ELDR Vice President Lousewies van der Laan, Andrew Duff debated positive aspects of a greater Europeanization of elections to the European Parliament as well as challenges together with Simon Hix, Professor at the London School of Economics and LYMEC President Alexander Plahr. In a lively round table discussion with 35 participants the panelists reflected on the consequences of such an electoral reform such as questions of how to select candidates and electoral campaigns on a transnational basis.
