Sophie In ‘t Veld MEP Humanist of the Year

The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) recently awarded Dutch Liberal MEP Sophie In ‘t Veld the International Humanist of the Year Award for her work on privacy, women and gay rights and for her initiative to launch the European Parliament platform for Secularism in Politics. Speaking at the Humanist Congress in Oslo earlier in August, In ‘t Veld commented: “This is a wonderful surprise. Humanism offers many answers for today’s problems and Humanists should be more assertive in the public debate which in recent years is dominated by those who divide our societies in competing religious and cultural groupings.”

Earlier this year, In ’t Veld was also awarded the Secularist of the Year award in the United Kingdom by the National Secular Society.
