June 6th - 8th

UN Human Rights Council, 17th Session

Geneva, Switzerland 

The UNPO will attend the 17th UN Human Rights Council session deliver an  oral statement under Agenda Item 6, Report of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Rwanda. UNPO will highlight its concern regarding Rwanda’s non-ratification of ILO Convention 169 regarding Indigenous and Tribal Communities, which is linked to the non-recognition of the existence of minorities and indigenous peoples, in particular the Batwa.

 



June 7th

Khmer Kampuchea Krom Delegation to meet with UN Officials

 

Geneva, Switzerland

UNPO will facilitate and organize meetings for a visiting Khmer Krom delegation to meet with the Office of the Independent Expert on Minorities Issues and a leading representative of the UNHCR Asian desk to discuss the situation of the evolution of dire human rights abuses in Vietnam involving Khmer Krom prisoners.

UNPO will attend the lecture of Dr. I William Zartman, Professor of International Organizations and Conflict Resolution at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Commemoration of James Moy Balao’s 1000th Day of Enforced Disappearance

Co-founder of the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), James Moy Balao disappeared in September 2008 and the CPA is encouraging friends around the world to join them in a renewed fight to pressure the new government to present facts in the case. Contact UNPO Secretariat for more details.

Advocacy training for young human rights activists and young Dutch professionals working in the field of human rights aimed at developing a deeper understanding of advocacy work as well as to build networks with other groups and activists. The participants will take part in workshops on budgeting, fundraising, working with media, lobbying within the UN system and much more.
