Open Society Fellows Rebecca MacKinnon and Evgeny Morozov will explore the changing landscape of Internet censorship. Special attention will be given to the techniques employed by governments to co-opt and steer online discussions in ideologically convenient directions. Focusing on the specific cases of Russia and China, panelists will discuss how the strategies and tools of control, manipulation, and censorship have evolved in both countries.

Rebecca MacKinnon is co-founder of Global Voices, a global citizen media network, and an assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre. She was previously CNN bureau chief in Beijing and in Tokyo. As an Open Society Fellow, MacKinnon is writing a book tentatively titled "Internet Freedom and Control: Lessons from China for the World."

Evgeny Morozov is an online media and digital activism expert and journalist from Belarus. Morozov has written on new media and technology issues for publications such as the Economist, the International Herald Tribune, openDemocracy, Le Monde, Slate, and Foreign Policy. Morozov is writing a book on how the Internet influences civic engagement and regime stability in China, Egypt, Russia, and Venezuela.

Isabel Hilton is a London-based journalist, broadcaster and the editor of China Dialogue, a bilingual website devoted to China and the environment. She was previously the editor of openDemocracy. She has been a staff writer at the Sunday Times, the Independent and the New Yorker.
