Piercing the Veil: Using Peer Reviews in the Fight Against Corruption

Made possible with support from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), IFES and the Central and Eastern European Law Initiative (CEELI) Institute’s new guide helps stakeholders turn peer review analysis into action. Gender-Sensitive Indicators for Early Warning of Violence and Conflict: A Global Framework
How can violence monitoring efforts and early warning systems better integrate gender-sensitive indicators? In collaboration with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations (CSO), IFES has developed a global framework and StoryMap to address gaps and build on existing efforts to mainstream gender in conflict early warning systems. On May 26, IFES and CSO held a virtual discussion with global experts from around the world, including Afghanistan and Nigeria, about the framework.

Thousands of Roma in Ukraine Elect Their Local Representatives

The inclusion of Roma people in political processes has been challenging due to negative stereotypes, stigma and biases. In collaboration with IFES and with support from the United States Agency for International Development, Global Affairs Canada and UK aid, Roma Women’s Fund “Chiricli” implemented an awareness-raising and informational campaign for Roma people in Ukraine ahead of the 2020 local elections.

Global: The Agency for the Prevention of Corruption posted a story about a recent IFES workshop. Two Vijesti articles reported on a May 26 conference on Financing of Political Parties and Election Campaigns that featured IFES’ Magnus Ohman. A European Parliament study on disinformation cited IFES’ 2019 working paper Social Media, Disinformation and Electoral Integrity. Asia-Pacific: ABC International Development published a story about recent journalist trainings supported by IFES.

Bangladesh: A Daily Star op-ed cited IFES work auditing the 2007 electoral roll.

Belarus: Interfax, Telegraf, Radio Liberty / Radio Free Europe, Deutsche Welle and other outlets reported on the June 1-2 conference co-hosted by IFES, Democratic Elections to Solve the Crisis in Belarus. The Central Election Commission of Georgia posted a press release about the conference.

Iraq: Al Jazeera quoted IFES’ Salam Al Waeli on misinformation and gender programs in Iraq.

Libya: EU Reporter cited an IFES public opinion survey from 2017.

Mexico: The National Electoral Institute (INE) and IFES published announcements about their new Memorandum of Understanding. Vértigo Político noted that IFES and other organizations would observe the June 6 elections. INE published written remarks and a photo gallery that mentioned the participation of IFES’ Maximo Zaldivar in the international observation mission. El Economista quoted Zalivar’s remarks, and Expansión Política cited IFES’ recommendations.

Philippines: A Manila Standard op-ed cited IFES findings on online misinformation, disinformation and hate speech.

Ukraine: The Constitutional Court of Ukraine posted about a case on the constitutionality of certain provisions of the Electoral Code and mentioned IFES.
