Spain approves bill to erase Franco’s legacy

The Spanish government, a coalition of socialists (PSOE) and left-wing Unidas Podemos (United We Can), approved on Tuesday a draft bill with specific measures aiming to erase the legacy of the civil war and of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, EFE and El País reported.

The “Ley de Memoria” (Memory Bill) builds on the existing historical memory legislation (“Ley de la Memoria Histórica”) and, among other measures, allows the shutting down of associations and civil groups that still glorify Franco’s memory, including the Francisco Franco Foundation (“Fundación Francisco Franco”), which will be declared illegal.

The text also declares “null and void” all “summary trials” during the four decades of repression under Franco’s regime, EFE reported.

The text also proposes extending eligibility for Spanish citizenship to the descendants of members of the International Brigades, who fought on the republican side in the Spanish Civil War.

Franco’s regime lasted from the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) until his death in 1975. (EUROEFE)
