Crisis Group Yemen Update #2

NEW BRIEFING NOTE FROM CRISIS GROUP

Crisis Group Yemen Update #2

This is Crisis Group’s second weekly update published as part of our Yemen Campaign. It provides up-to-the minute insights into the four-year-old civil war and the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis.

Fear of famine is the topic of this week’s new introductory trendline after a fire on 24 January damaged two silos at Red Sea Mills, a vital wheat storage, milling and distribution hub for the World Food Programme (WFP). Tensions could escalate after accusations of ceasefire violations from both the Saudi-led coalition and Huthi rebels, as well as due to the lack of a full-scale monitoring mission by the UN. This increases the likelihood that the Hodeida ceasefire will collapse. Meanwhile, Yemen is also likely to feature prominently in U.S.-led discussions on Iran and the Middle East in Warsaw in February.
